Tips for driving a hired campervan in Australia

Australia is a big country and towns can be a long distance apart, especially in outback or remote areas. The following tips will help you to enjoy your holiday.

  • Research your intended travelling route:
    • Have a plan of what you want to see and do along the way:
      • The campervan hire company will likely be able to provide you with information and perhaps discount vouchers.
      • There is a lot of information on the Internet.
      • Visit tourist information centres.
    • Use the satellite navigation (if provided, or hire one or bring your own).
    • Enjoy the scenery as you drive.
  • Understand how far you can travel in a day.
    • You will be likely be driving at a speed of around 80-90 km per hour.
    • Travel for no more than 4-5 hours per day.
    • Aim to cover around 200 kilometres per day.
    • If you have a second driver, share the driving as much as possible.
    • Have a break from driving every two hours -- pull over and make yourself a cup of coffee.
    • Avoid driving at dusk and dawn as these are the times that wildlife will be on the road.
  • Carry plenty of water with you, especially when traveling in the outback.
  • Choose travel dates according to climate, and be familiar with school holiday times.
  • Combine a domestic flight with a one way campervan hire to save time.
  • Bring your favourite CDs to listen to along the way -- in outback and country areas radio reception can be poor or non-existent.
